Every year since 2001, Miami Beach has hosted the super-popular Urban Beach Week. Owners of Miami Beach real estate get a front row seat to what is one of the most well-attended events of the year in South Beach. Over Memorial Day weekend, Miami Beach will be filled with the sounds of some of hip hop’s hottest artists like P Diddy, Lil’ Wayne and more while party-goers enjoy the area’s pristine beaches by day and trendy clubs by night.

About Urban Beach Week

Urban Beach Week attracts both locals and visitors alike, with well over 300,000 people enjoying the festivities during this five-day event. The festival is known for its over-the-top parties and concentration of hip hop concerts, with many celebrities on hand. The event itself is not sponsored by the city, but is instead a long weekend full of performances being held in private venues throughout Miami Beach and the environs.

This is one festival where the sky is the limit. Some of the top DJs from around the world are flown in, pool parties are packed with beach bodies, drinks flow round the clock, and everyone is deck out in their most fashionable wardrobe pieces. All of Miami Beach’s hottest clubs are booked with A-list talent and stay open until the early morning hours to keep the party going.

How It All Started

Urban Beach Week can trace its beginnings back to 1999, when a small group of people decided they wanted a different kind of Memorial Day celebration in Miami Beach. At the time, the festival centered on fashion, and clothing companies began bringing in celebrities to wear their clothes to get some press for their fashion lines. The event was originally known as Urban Fashion Week.

As Miami gained popularity as a vacation destination and celebrity hotspot, more people began attending the event. Soon recording artists and other entertainers took notice and began to schedule concerts and private parties to coincide with the Memorial Day weekend. Since that time, Urban Beach Week has grown to become one of the largest urban festivals in the world with a wide range of events such as a Celebrity Basketball Game, posh pool parties and a reggae festival. It is now known as the ultimate beach party for the hip hop culture. It is estimated that between 350,000 and 450,000 people will attend the event in 2014.

What to Know

Those who own Miami Beach condos and Miami Beach luxury real estate and who plan to be in town over Memorial Day weekend should be aware of the increase in traffic congestion throughout the duration of the festival. With so many people attending the event, there will be additional police presence throughout the area as well as DUI checkpoints. Ocean Drive will be closed to traffic while Washington Avenue and Collins Avenue will become one-way lanes. Plan to avoid driving in the area over the holiday weekend or give yourself plenty of extra time. And if you are in town – why not join in on the fun?

Looking for a place to have a drink or have something to eat on the Miami Beach boardwalk along the water? Check out The Setai, Carraba's or The Cabana Beach Club at the Eden Roc. Here's an abbreviated rundown:
